Meta-Optic Mirror Brings Smart Glasses into Everyday Life

TDK has successfully demonstrated the world's first mirror for direct retinal projection (DRP) displays in smart glasses using meta-optics technology, which employs intricate nanoscale structures to manipulate the reflection and refraction of light with remarkable flexibility.
Just 150 nm thick, the ultrathin, transparent mirror offers 80% visible-light transmittance, paving the way for stylish, natural-looking smart glasses suitable for everyday use.

Key features

  • TDK's meta-optic mirror uses nanoscale structures to replace the bulky curved mirrors that were required for direct retinal projection (DRP)
  • Its ultrathin, 150 nm design allows it to be embedded directly into ordinary eyeglass lenses
  • With 80% visible-light transmittance, it offers high transparency while minimizing the rainbow patterns (eye glow) associated with conventional waveguide displays
  • It can be manufactured using wafer processes comparable to those used in semiconductor production, opening the way to cost-competitive mass production
