TDK’s Meta-Optic Mirror for Smart Glasses Receives METI Minister’s Award at CEATEC 2026
TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) announced today that its meta-optic mirror for smart-glasses displays has received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at CEATEC 2026.
The CEATEC AWARD recognizes products, technologies and services that demonstrate outstanding innovation. The METI Minister’s Award honors technologies that contribute significantly to the development of the CPS/IoT community and the realization of Society 5.0 by creating new value, addressing social and industrial challenges, and advancing digital transformation.
TDK has successfully demonstrated the world’s first direct retinal projection (DRP) display for smart glasses using a meta-optic mirror. The flat mirror incorporates nanoscale reflectors, is approximately 150 nanometers thick, and can be embedded directly into a lens. With visible-light transmittance of approximately 80%, it enables smart glasses with transparency comparable to that of ordinary eyeglass lenses, creating a natural appearance suitable for everyday use.
The current meta-optic mirror supports monochrome operation. TDK aims to demonstrate full-color operation and achieve mass production within the next few years.
In selecting the technology for the award, the judges highly recognized TDK’s proprietary nanostructure-control technology, which addresses the aesthetic limitations of conventional direct retinal projection systems. The technology combines a natural appearance for everyday wear with a slim, simplified optical system. It was also praised as an innovative manufacturing breakthrough that could accelerate the practical application of smart glasses and support the creation of a next-generation human-machine interface market.
TDK will continue advancing its meta-optic mirror technology to help transform smart glasses—an application expected to grow as part of the expanding AI ecosystem—and support their wider adoption in society.
