Sustainability Journey
Aiming for 100% RE-generated electricity
The TDK Group has set a goal of achieving 50% of the electricity used at all of its business sites in Japan and overseas to be derived from renewable energy sources by 2025 and 100% by 2050, and is promoting a variety of measures to achieve this goal.
Accelerating Introduction of Renewable Energy
As a global company, TDK has a social responsibility to address the global issue of climate change, and as part of our efforts to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, we will start full-scale introduction of renewable energy in 2020, and in November 2022, we will join the RE100*1 initiative. In November 2022, TDK joined the RE100*1 initiative, and has been working to expand the use of clean energy.
TDK's production sites are located in more than 30 countries and regions, and we are promoting initiatives tailored to the different energy conditions in each region. The introduction of renewable energy is based on purchase contracts with power generators and in-house power generation*2 installed on/off-site, with the purchase of "renewable energy certificates*3" as needed.
As a result, as of March 2024, 50 of the 81 manufacturing sites will be 100% powered by renewable energy. We achieved a global renewable energy-derived ratio of 55.2%.
- *1 An international initiative run in partnership with the Climate Group and CDP, an international environmental NGO. It is comprised of companies that are committed to 100% renewable energy for the electricity used in their business.
- *2 A method in which a renewable energy power source is installed onsite or offsite at the customer's premises for self-consumption.
- *3 Securitization of the "environmental added value" of electricity derived from renewable energy.
Renewable Energy Electricity Installation Ratio
Promoting Optimal Adoption in Each Country and Region
In Japan, we shifted 100% of the electricity used at all manufacturing sites in Japan to renewable energy sources in July 2023. Through collaboration among the various divisions, learning from the good practices of other Group companies, and partnerships with electric power companies, we were able to achieve the 100% transition in just one year.
TDK Electronics Group, which has a number of production sites in Europe, has implemented measures with the goal of achieving zero CO2 emissions by 2030, and has succeeded in increasing the amount of electricity generated by solar power plants within TEG and under exclusive contract by a factor of 10 over the three years from 2019 to 2022. TDK Philippines has also succeeded in increasing the amount of electricity used by TDK Philippines.
In addition, TDK Philippines Corporation is introducing renewable energy sources that match local characteristics, such as geothermal power generation for all electricity used at TDK Philippines, and TDK Foil Iceland ehf. in Iceland, where approximately 70% of electricity is generated by hydroelectric power and the remaining 30% by geothermal power generation.
As an industry leader, TDK will continue to promote the shift to renewable energy on a global scale to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
