TDK Corporation announced today that it has developed an SMD circulator for WiMAX base stations that features a new structure.

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) makes possible data communications at higher speeds and of larger data volumes compared to existing communications infrastructure and is thought to be a next-generation, high-speed communications technology suitable for the ubiquitous computing era. A circulator is a three-terminal, high-frequency component with circuit elements that draw signals entering each terminal to adjacent terminals and circulate them. Circulators are key components necessary for rectifying the transmission and reception signals in base stations used for mobile communications. The new circulator is compatible with the frequency bands used for WiMAX (2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz) and with wide bands (200 MHz).

One of the key characteristics of this product is that it is a new SMD type with the main unit embedded in a hollowed out resin substrate. As a result, surface mounting and reflow solder can be used when soldering to the substrate, which will increase the efficiency of mounting processes. In addition, the circulator body (a metal case) is in direct contact with the base station mounting substrate, and as a result, heat generated by the circulator is efficiently dispersed, ensuring high reliability even though it is an SMD type. Also, flexible pattern arrangements are possible with respect to the substrate installation location.
