This dish was introduced to Malaysia during the British colonial era by Chinese people from Fujian Province in mainland China. Pork cuts such as spare ribs are slowly simmered until tender with aromatic spices such as star anise and cinnamon, together with garlic, creating a rich and flavorful soup. Add the provided garlic and chili peppers to the sweet soy sauce as desired, then dip the meat in the sauce before eating. In Malaysia, this dish is traditionally enjoyed by pouring the broth over the rice.

Cooked in the simmering liquid and chicken fat, the rice is infused with the rich flavor of the chicken. Enjoy it with two dipping sauces.
