Inductors―Part 3 Inductor Types and Manufacturing Methods

Inductor types by application, form factor, and construction principle

Inductors are produced in a broad range of variations depending on their use - from high-frequency communication modules to power supply circuits and general electronic systems. While some models allow variable inductance, most are built with a fixed value for stability and precision.

Each type of inductor can be classified in two main ways. By physical structure - into leaded versions (axial or radial) and compact SMD inductor types used on modern PCBs. And by internal construction - into wire-wound, Multilayer, and thin-film inductors. These design differences affect everything from current capacity to magnetic performance.

Today, leading inductor manufacturers focus on refining core materials and miniaturization, improving the consistency of inductor components for both power and signal applications. Such diversity ensures that there’s a suitable inductor type for every electronic design, from smartphones to automotive control units.

Inductor manufacturing methods

Modern inductor manufacturing relies on three primary methods - wire-wound, Multilayer , and thin-film construction. Each approach determines the electrical characteristics, cost, and performance stability of the final product.

Wire-wound inductors are built by winding copper wire around a magnetic core, a traditional method still favored by many power inductor manufacturers for its high current capacity and durability. Multilayer inductors, on the other hand, are made by stacking multiple printed layers of conductive material and ferrite, achieving compactness ideal for mobile and high-density circuits. Thin-film inductors represent the most advanced stage, produced through precise deposition techniques similar to semiconductor manufacturing - enabling consistent inductance values and excellent high-frequency response.

Across all types of inductors, precision manufacturing and material control remain essential. Global inductor manufacturers continue to refine these methods to improve miniaturization, efficiency, and compatibility with next-generation electronics.
