Community Smart Grid experimental demonstration project being carried out in collaboration with Akita University, METI, and local authorities

With the aim of utilizing clean energy and facilitating a low-carbon society, TDK began a Community Smart Grid demonstration project in Ogatamura, Akita Prefecture in April 2010. The project was initiated, in collaboration with Akita University and four local firms, with equipment located at the Michi-no-eki Ogata government-designated rest area and vicinity.

A smart grid is a next-generation transmission network that is drawing attention worldwide. It uses information and communications technology to maintain an optimal balance for electricity supply and demand.

The theme of this Community Smart Grid demonstration project is community self-sufficiency in electricity.

The project aims to provide a stable electricity supply and prevent extended effects in case of a power outage due to a lightning strike or natural disaster in a neighboring district. It also aims to bring electricity to remote islands and unelectrified districts.

At present, a combination of natural energy sources such as wind power, solar panels, and fuel cells provides up to 17 kW of power to Ogatamura.

TDK supplies bidirectional converters that function as power conversion equipment. This equipment is used to convert DC voltage to AC for use in homes, and also boosts the voltage for sending power through the transmission network.

TDK aims to verify conversion efficiency through this demonstration project and use the results to develop new energy management technologies and products that will support ecological systems in the future.

Bidirectionality is the key!
